JRS UK and Fr Peter Gallagher SJ celebrate refugee success in ESOL language programme

JRS UK's ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) programme helps asylum seekers in the UK gain confidence and essential language skills

Fr Peter Gallagher SJ, Provincial of the Jesuits in Britain, joined refugees, volunteers and staff at the Jesuit Refugee Service UK last week to celebrate achievements in the ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) programme.

The ceremony was not just about recognising academic progress but also celebrating the commitment and joy of refugee friends taking part in the programme.

JRS UK’s ESOL classes have been instrumental in building confidence and language skills, among people seeking sanctuary, as they seek to rebuild their lives in the UK.

One refugee friend receiving her certificate from Fr Peter reflected:

“The ESOL classes gave me so much confidence to speak English, whereas I used to feel very hesitant.”

Andrew, JRS UK’s ESOL teacher added:

“Age has no limits; our students from different age groups all excel in their English skills.”

This celebration was a testament to the incredible hard work and dedication of our refugee friends. Their achievements remind us that happiness is found in community, hope, and cherished moments.

JRS UK, as a work of the Jesuits in Britain, is proud to support, advocate, and celebrate with our refugee community.
