The Stations of the Cross is a traditional way of praying during Lent, helping us reflect on the suffering of Jesus in his passion, which he endured to save all people. This year, JRS UK’s version invites us to reflect on the suffering of refugees and forcibly displaced people in the world today, in light of the suffering that Jesus endured.

In 2026, hostility towards refugees is growing in the UK, and decades of progress on refugee protection are being stripped away. For newly recognised refugees, protection is temporary, subject to review every 30 months. This makes it harder for refugees to integrate, find work, and rebuild their lives. With these changes, it could take up to 20 years for newly recognised refugees to settle in the UK.
Family reunion (a rare safe route available to close family of refugee) has been suspended. Although there are no safe routes for the majority of people, the new ‘one-in-one-out’ scheme detains and punishes people for making the only journeys to safety available to them.
These policies will inflict profound harm—not only on those accompanied by JRS UK, but on all who seek safety in the UK. This online prayer event offers a moment to pause, reflect, and pray. It is a chance to stand in solidarity with those who are suffering and to share in Christ’s journey of love.
