For nearly 500 years, Jesuits have taken up Christ’s challenge to serve a world in need for the glory of God and the help of souls.

Explore our history

The history of Jesuits in Britain is a story of bravery and sacrifice. While the first Jesuit activity in Scotland began within a decade of the Society’s foundation in 1540, the first full Jesuit mission to England was launched from Rome in April 1580.

St Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, led a spiritual revolution that changed the church and the world forever. Ignatius was many things: soldier, mystic, pilgrim, prisoner, founder, priest and saint. Discover him for yourself.
