Their arrival marks the start of a new chapter: in the months ahead, they will embark on formation study in disciplines varying from New Testament Biblical Studies to Drama and Movement Therapy.
Thirteen of the Jesuits come from Asian provinces (including six from the Philippines), six from Africa, three from Europe, and one from South America. They met under the guidance of Fr Roger Dawson SJ, the Provincial’s Delegate for Overseas Jesuits in Formation, for an induction day in Mount Street, Central London, designed to help them settle into life in the UK.
The induction included a welcome from the Provincial Superior, Fr Peter Gallagher SJ, presentations on the history of the Jesuits in Britain, a visit to the British Jesuit Archives, and Mass at Farm Street Church. The day ended with dinner and a trip to the National Theatre to see Bacchae.
We welcome Jesuits from other Provinces who would like to study in Britain. There are excellent opportunities for undergraduate, postgraduate studies and professional training at some excellent academic and training institutions. Some of the world’s best universities are in Britain including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Imperial College London and University College London.
We recommend that a Jesuit studies near a Jesuit community where they will live and have the support of their local Superior and brother Jesuits. In practice this means that we suggest that you look for places of study that are in or near to: London, Oxford, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. There are other possibilities, but these locations are a good place to start.
