Donhead pupils bring the Christmas story to life at annual Festival of Carols and Readings

December 23, 2025

On Thursday 11 December, Donhead Preparatory School held its annual Festival of Carols and Readings at Sacred Heart Church in Wimbledon.

Pupils took the centre stage, telling the story of Jesus’ birth through readings and carols, and this year was especially memorable as the pre-prep choir—Year 1 and 2 pupils—joined for the first time. Parents, children, teachers, staff, and the wider school community came together in a joyous celebration.

Jan Quant, Chair of Governors at Donhead, shared his experience of this longstanding tradition: “I’ve been lucky enough to be here for 20 years, both as a parent and lastly for the last 13 years as a Governor, and is always for me the start of Christmas. You leave with wonderful thoughts of the advent season. It’s an enjoyable experience for the whole community.”

The Mass was led by Fr Nopparat Ruankool SJ, fondly called Fr Bee, who reflected on the meaning of the season: “Advent is the time where we are awaiting the coming of Christ into our world. Tonight is so special as students can experience welcoming Jesus into their lives.”

The service not only celebrated the joy of the Christmas season but also demonstrated the heart of Jesuit education in action. Catherine Hitchcock, Headteacher of Donhead Preparatory School, said: “One of the key aspects of tonight is showing all of the Jesuit virtues that come with the Jesuit Pupil Profile through their readings and carols, and coming together as a community.”

The Festival of Carols and Readings beautifully embodies the essence of Jesuit education: nurturing not just academic growth, but spiritual and moral formation. It guides pupils to live virtuous lives rooted in faith, community, and reflection. For all who attended, it was a moving reminder of the Advent message, that Christ comes to dwell within us, calling us to joy, hope, and service.
