Jesuit ethos and pastoral care at the heart of strong ISI report for Stonyhurst College

May 22, 2026

Stonyhurst College has welcomed the publication of its latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report, which praised the school’s Jesuit ethos, pastoral care and commitment to pupil wellbeing.

The report recognised pupils’ “highly developed spiritual and moral understanding” alongside a “deep sense of social responsibility”, reflecting the Jesuit values at the heart of the school community.

As one of eight Jesuit schools in Britain, Stonyhurst forms part of a long-standing educational tradition rooted in service, compassion and the formation of “men and women for others”.

Inspectors also highlighted boarding and pastoral provision as key strengths, describing Stonyhurst as “a vibrant, diverse and inclusive community where pupils learn the value of living together in harmony”. Pupils were found to be “well cared for and effectively supported” throughout their educational journey.

The inspection confirmed that the school met all Independent School Standards across the five core inspection areas. Particular recognition was given to Stonyhurst’s co-curricular programme, which was identified as an area of “Significant Strength” — an accolade awarded to only a small number of schools.

Inspectors noted that the programme “promotes pupils’ wellbeing particularly effectively” and praised both the breadth of activities on offer and the high levels of pupil participation.

William Doherty, Head of Stonyhurst, said:

“The recent ISI Inspection and the performance of Stonyhurst in not only meeting all standards but in achieving a significant strength in our co-curricular programme provides an outstanding springboard for our future aspirations.

“We hold true to the mindset that innovation is our tradition, that our faith does justice, that our pursuit of academic excellence is complemented by our holistic co-curricular programme and that we form our pupils as impactful global citizens and with a true understanding of human excellence as men and women for others.”

The report also praised leadership and governance across the school, noting that leaders are “ambitious for pupils’ outcomes”, while safeguarding was identified as another strength, with inspectors finding an “embedded culture of safeguarding at the school”.
