Jesuits in Britain appoints new Delegate for Social & Ecological Justice

May 6, 2026

Jesuits in Britain are pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Chitnis as Province Delegate for Social & Ecological Justice.

Paul Chitnis has served as Director of Jesuit Missions for nearly fourteen years, where he has overseen the organisation’s work supporting marginalised communities across the globe.

In this position, Paul will help coordinate and strengthen the Province's engagement with some of the most pressing social and ecological concerns of our time: migration, climate change, homelessness and poverty, and support for young people, prisoners and the elderly. He will ensure this work remains rooted in Ignatian spirituality and inspired by the Spiritual Exercises. He will begin this work shortly, following a brief period of leave.

He takes over from Fr Paul O'Reilly SJ, who held the role for several years alongside his growing commitment to medical work with people experiencing homelessness. As those commitments now take up all his time, Fr Paul agreed that it was right to advertise the role for open recruitment.

Paul is the first lay person to hold this role, reflecting the growing collaboration between Jesuits and lay partners in the apostolic mission of the Province.
