Jesuit Fr Kensy Joseph takes Final Vows at Farm Street Church

September 10, 2025

On Sunday 17 August, Fr Kensy Joseph SJ professed his Final Vows as a Jesuit at Farm Street Church in Mayfair, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow Jesuits.

These vows, taken after the final stage of Jesuit formation called Tertianship, mark not only the culmination of nearly two decades of preparation, but also a lifelong commitment to the Society of Jesus and its mission in service of Christ’s Church.

Speaking on the morning of his Final Vows, Kensy reflected with quiet gratitude on the path that had brought him here:

“I woke up feeling a sense of peace, a sense of joy, and of gratitude above all for all that God has given me. In a way, this is not the end of my Jesuit journey, this is, in a certain sense, the beginning. I’ve been a Jesuit for nearly half my life now. I’m at the stage where I feel this is my home, and this marks that final step to say ‘okay, it’s not me and the Society anymore, it’s us now.’”

Moments after professing his vows, Kensy was moved by the love and support of those who had gathered to witness the occasion:

“I’m just surprised by the love that I’ve received. It’s so nice to see so many faces in the crowd, people that I haven’t seen for some time, for many years as well, who have travelled long distances to be here.”

Kensy’s journey to this point has been marked by faith, perseverance and a wide range of ministry experiences. Born in Kuwait to Indian parents, he initially pursued a career in management consulting and financial services after earning a degree in computer science and engineering. In 2007, he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Birmingham. His formation took him to Pune and London for studies in philosophy, to London and Manchester for theology, and to Limerick, where he taught religion, philosophy and mathematics. He also served as assistant university chaplain in Manchester before being ordained in June 2018.

Since ordination, Kensy has ministered as a school chaplain in Glasgow, a university chaplain in Birmingham, and most recently in London, as assistant chaplain to Jesuit Young Adult Ministries and Catholic chaplain at Imperial College. In 2023, he completed his tertianship — the final stage of Jesuit formation — in South Africa. From September 2025, he begins a new role as coordinator of Jesuit Young Adult Ministries in Central London, while continuing his chaplaincy at Imperial.

The liturgy at Farm Street was a moment of joy and thanksgiving for all who attended. The Provincial of the Jesuits in Britain, Fr Peter Gallagher SJ, who received Kensy’s vows, said:

“I felt tremendously honoured to receive Kensy’s vows. I’ve known him a long time. I know how hard he works and what a big contribution he makes to the mission of the Province. Now he and the Society are one.”

Fr Dominic Robinson SJ, the parish priest at Farm Street, also reflected on the depth of the occasion:

“It’s just been a wonderful evening. After all these years, to confirm God’s hand in this Brother’s life.”

Members of the Jesuit Young Adult Ministry in Central London, where Kensy serves, were delighted to be present. One young adult said: “He’s a very good example for all of us.” Another added, addressing Kensy directly: “We’re really happy that you wanted to share this with us.”

For Kensy, the ministry he shares with young people remains a source of inspiration and hope:

“With all of our young people I gain a great sense of hope when I look at the Church. Our young people are not waiting for the priest to do everything… They’re incredibly dynamic, they’re self-starters, and that’s what I want to see. That’s what the Church needs.”

This special moment at Farm Street was both a milestone in Kensy’s personal vocation and a celebration of the wider Jesuit mission. His Final Vows now stand as a powerful witness to a life given in faith, service, and hope.
